| 1. Journaling is a word used during database management. It is the simultaneous (real time) logging of all data-file updates. This log provides an audit trail and is used to reconstruct the database if the original file is damaged or destroyed.

2. The process of logging changes or updates to a database since the last full backup. Journals can be used to recover previous versions of a file before updates were made, or to facilitate disaster recovery, if performed remotely, by applying changes to the last safe backup.
